Think Twice When You Name Your Brands :)

When my previous company, MHD launched a new single malt named “Glenmorangie” a few years ago, many customers (mostly Chinese educated) and even the company sales representatives were having difficulties in pronouncing the brand name.  I still remember the brand manager had to educate everybody how to pronounce the brand name correctly during meetings :D.

Brand manager, “Let’s pronounce the name together – ‘Glen-Morrun-Jee’.”
People, “...... (Cantonese :  geng mou yan ji – meaning : worry nobody knows).”
Brand manager, “NO! Glen-Morrun-Jee’.”
People, “Huh? 惊无? (Cantonese : geng mou ngan ji – meaning: worry no money)”

To make things worse, this particular brand manager also handled another vodka brand called “Belvedere”.  So, he introduced himself as “brand manager of Glenmorangie and Belvedere”. Some Chinese customers commented, “乜话? 惊无人人屌 ? (Cantonese: me wa? geng mou yan ji bei yan diu? – direct translation: What? Worry nobody knows that fucked by people?  My poor ex-colleague :D.

A few years back, I was watching the Osim iGallop TVC together with one of my friends.  We look at each other and said, “No wonder it’s called Obscene iGallop.”

There are many other funny brand names that we heard since young such as:
  •          Kanebo – means fuck your mother in Hokkien
  •          Proton Saga –笨蛋傻 means stupid fool in Mandarin
  •          Toshiba –倒屎 means waste disposal in Cantonese
  •          Kickapoo - 契家 means mistress in Cantonese
  •          Goon Institute – stupid people institute??
Think twice and in many other languages when you name your brands :D.

Armani’s Hot and Steamy Ads

I am neither a soccer nor tennis fan but, I do know who Cristiano Ronaldo is. To me, he used to be just another footballer with a good looking face.  I have changed my mind after watching him stripping down in last year’s Emporio Armani Men’s Underwear and Armani Jeans ad campaign - “Housekeeping”.  Ronaldo was immediately listed in my hottest hunks list :D.  Those toned abs and his hot body have got me watched the video again and again :p.

Just a few days ago, l saw another new face for Emporio Armani Spring/Summer 2011 campaign.  I am totally not a tennis fan, only after seeing the steamy hot guy in the ad, I learned that Rafael Nadal, the 24 YO Spanish tennis pro is currently ranked No. 1 tennis player in the world (ah… shallow me :D).  WOW!! Didn’t realize that tennis player can be so damn HOT!! :D

Apparently Nadal is the third athlete that was hand-picked by Emporio Armani to be its spokemodels after David Beckham (sorry, Beckham, you are hot too but I am in my midlife and I tend to look at guys below 30 YO :p) and Cristiano Ronaldo.  I wonder who will be next?  :) :)

Those killer abs

and killer smile :)
